Ewen's Running Diary - 1984

This page is my running diary from 1984, the year I turned 27. I was racing in Canberra, on the track in summer and with the ACT Cross Country Club in winter. This was my 6th year of running (5th year of consistent training). My training in 1984 was 'low mileage' with lots of tempo effort running (far too much in hindsight). I was wary of higher mileage training due to a long recovery from injury following my second marathon in 1981. I was improving but my aerobic capacity was underdeveloped (as was my speed). Start times for races are approximate as I rarely recorded that information.

My best results during 1984 were: 800m - 2:21.68, 1500m - 4:46.8, 3000m - 10:32.0, 5000m - 18:33.0, 10000m - 38:29.0, 3k Steeplechase - 11:45.0, 8k road - 30:10, 10k road - 39:38, 10 miles - 69:15, Half Marathon - 84:14, 12k Cross Country - 49:49, City to Surf 14k - 56:49.

23 6.00am. Race: Mackay Half Marathon - 2nd in 84:14 (3:59.55/km)! A PB. Happy with that. First place was a long way ahead in around 75 minutes, 3rd a minute or so back. Faster runners ran the marathon (won in 2:26 Merv Shields and 3:03 Johanna Mackenzie). 13 in the half and 28 in the full. Splits: 3k 11:30, 10k 39:51. Legs tired the last 5k. Nice flat course on smooth, quiet roads.
