![]() The field for the 3km race [48k]
|
Race Weather: You couldn't ask for a better winters day. 17 degrees and fine.
Race Officials: Gordon Nightingale, Christine Pauling, Murray Hill, Mick Corlis, Wayne Corlis, Todd Berry, Shaun McCabe, Paul Barnett and Jim Tucker. Race Manager: Ewen Thompson Race History: This was the third year in a row for the Mt. Tuggeranong fire trail races. This year the mountain run was a last minute 'unofficial' event held after the 5km race. The inaugural event report is still available.
Race Report: A small enthusiastic field of four completed the Under-14's race over a measured 1km. Shane Gaul won from Kristina McGovern, Sonja Taylor and Ashley Mulcahy. For 1999 the 3km race was an ACTCCC Junior Pointscore event. The ensuing hot competition saw the first six finishers break the old course record. Martin Bye, an under-20 athlete from North Canberra, was on a mission and ran the great time of 9:28 to finish comfortably ahead of Weston Creek's Wayne Corlis and Chris Diamond. The SCT trio of Mark Shepherd, Matt Keen and Chris Williams were the first under-16, under-18 and under-14 finishers. SCT's Justine Shepherd was also in a record-breaking mood leaving a strong field of junior women in her wake. She ran 11:23 to better Amy Rugendyke's 1998 time by 11 seconds. When you consider that Justine is an under-14 athlete and the hilly nature of the course, her run was very impressive to say the least. The 5km event saw yet another record fall, making three for the day. Incredibly it was Martin Bye backing up from the 3km race who broke Danny O'Dea's 1997 record by a scant six seconds. There was a 'gang of four' after the first 2km loop with Greg Webster, Martin Bye, Anthony Scott and Mark Maslen holding a fifteen metre break to Craig Core. Craig managed to join the group after the lap around the electricity sub-station. Martin broke away on the hills in the second half of the course to win in 16:43. A surprising second place went to 17-year-old Craig Core (SCT) who ran 16:49 to equal the old course record. Anthony Scott ran a course PB of 16:55 to place third. SCT junior training partners Erin Sutcliffe and Michelle Ward-Pearson set the early pace amongst the women in the 5k. Fiona Jorgensen used her mountain running ability to good effect, catching the tear-aways and establishing a winning break after the first 2km loop. Erin and Michelle were still together but their hold on second looked tenuous. Jane Zeller and Alison Stanfield were closing fast. Fiona time-trialed to be first woman home in 19:38, just six seconds slower than her performance from last year. Jane won the battle for second with 15-year-old Michelle running an excellent 20:20 in third place just ahead of new ACT representative Alison Stanfield. Erin's 20:34 showed she is returning to form and placed her 10th in the race ranking's. The 3.2km mountain run attracted an exclusive field of eight. ACT reps for the National Championships Trevor Jacobs and Stuart Doyle backed up after the 5km race to place first and second. Trevor ran 13:42 - just under a minute slower than Chris Cook's record - with Stuart running 13:59. Gordon Nightingale who helped me set up the course ran a respectable 17:23 wearing jeans. Summing up... a great afternoon's running. Perhaps we'll see you back again next century?
